Dear [livejournal.com profile] snapples_apples , [livejournal.com profile] takhys , & [livejournal.com profile] telekine ,

There is a contest for photo-bombing with Polkaroo.

I thought this was important enough to warrant an announcement and yes, for the record, I will be entering.

Dear JJ Abrams,

Let me go through the checklist:

Using camera tricks / lighting / gels, to hide that LA, or whatever city you're filming in because I'm too damned lazy to check, looks like everywhere else in the world?  Check.

Snappy dialogue, at moments that are not entirely snappy dialogue moments?  Check.

Spies who can do everything, know everyone, and speak every language?  Check.

Cover which is almost laughable?  Check.

Hidden agendas"?  Check.

Ridiculous secondary character with a complete lack of social skills?  Check.

Ridiculously attractive cast?  Check.

Yup, I've already seen this show.  It was called Alias.

Feeling a little duped right now.

It's the time of year between the selection of the top 10 for 2011 for the provincial reading committee, and the start of the epic reading for the list for 2012 (late October/ early November).  Thus, from September the first to the end of October, I have this ridiculous pressure to read all the books ever.

Actually, I mean read all the books I want to read.  Thus far, I've managed to get through Steig Larsson's Millennium trilogy and am now halfway through AJ Jacobs's The Know-It-All (it's his only work I haven't read).  I'm hoping to make it through at least 8 other books before the committee starts up again.  I was going to toss on books three and four from the Sookie Stackhouse series but, and I know there are a lot of people on my f-list who are fans, I cannot stand the books.  I am not going to waste my time reading books that irritate me half the time.

I've got several other books to delve into next, but really, it's insane that I only get about two months of personal reading time.

Last year, for the reading committee, I read 59 books.  That's insane.  It's not that I couldn't do it.  I did, and threw in books for myself along the way, though not as many as I would've liked, but the numbers are creeping up every year.  I'm betting we'll break the 65 mark this year.
While I still have other journals, this is my journal.  I've been Spy for too long to give this up.

/hugs journal.
Welcome to the NYC edition of the random statements for which I provide no context.  Enjoy.

I've been having a craptastically horrific weekend, and then [livejournal.com profile] indomitable_one  sent me this link.

Anyone who has had to listen to parents drone on inappropriately about their kids will find this the greatest thing ever.  I'm talking those parents who feel the need to share those gross potty-training stories with people, which all sum up to I actually hate my fashion accessory kid and then have the gall to sound like they feel pity for you when you're all -- um me, kids?  Probably not.

This post was inspired by someone currently posting updates on her labour on FB.  Really?  Don't you have something more important to do right now?

People I have met via LJ, who I have also met in person:

[livejournal.com profile] elysium1996   (By default, I need to add Mr. Ely here!)
[livejournal.com profile] bubbleslayer

While there are a variety of people who I first came in contact with on LJ who I have also met in person, that was much more IRL, particularly Polaris related.  If you are one of those people, please don't be offended if you're not on this list!  It doesn't mean I don't think you're awesome.

People I have met via LJ that I would like to meet in person:

Everyone else, but I'm listing a couple of people who I have known the longest on LJ, who I am totally trying to wrangle invites to visit, now that I have a passport and all.  What subtlety?

If anyone else would like to offer a recently granted passport holder a place to stay, I would not say no!

In the same vein as Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, I just finished Sense and Sensibility and Sea-Monsters.

There is tentacle porn, honest to goodness tentacle porn.

I thought information like that needed to be shared with everyone.

Someone needs to type a Polaris panel on this topic.

Patrick Macnee, aka John Steed for The Avengers, is 88 today.  Since I could, unofficially, call this my first fandom (I was 6 when watching the reruns on Public TV), I'm always a little afraid of the day I hear he's passed.  So, many happy future birthdays to the infinitely charming Patrick Macnee.

I have no shame.  I am so not above campaigning, shamelessly.

That is, if I had any concept as to what shame is, so I'll have to go without it!

Of course, the button that I picked, will be a total shock to everyone.  By total shock, I mean so obvious that people would be surprised if I didn't pick it.
The prime rib I am attempting to cook, smells delicious.

*stares at oven and drools*

ETA:  And it was insanely good.
Holmes and Watson are so married.

OMG, they went there.

And there.

I'm glad they made Victorian London not pretty.

Oh, and there's totally a meta essay to write about how Holmes influenced House, only to have House influence this incarnation of Holmes.

I find myself strangely attracted to both Holmes and Watson.  This usually does not happen with the actors in question.

The dog almost steals the movie -- which is a serious, serious feat.

Oh yes, and then they went there.

Now they just need to get Hugh Laurie for the sequel as Moriarty.
I still loved SyFy's Alice. Yesterday, I enjoyed the concept (although, I could've done without the psychedelic stuff, since that was all due to Jefferson flipping Airplane) but I really loved the second part.

And, of course, Andrew Lee Potts was now Connor, just with extra kick-ass. It made me smile.
The SyFy modernization of Alice, makes me happy.

Besides the fact Andrew Lee Potts from Primeval is perfectly cast as the modern Mad Hatter (he's just Connor with a bit of extra bastard), the art director clearly studied John Tenniel's original illustrations, as the subtle references are so frequent, and wonderfully integrated.

All right, so the plot is a little forced in bits, to try and fit as much of the original texts (both AAIW and TTLG) as possible, but the obvious reverence for the material and not a cheap gimmick because you're known for being wacky (I'm looking at you, Tim Burton), and the amusement at spotting so many elements that are included, makes up for it. Not that the original plot was known for being overly sensible either.

Other awesome bits: Jack being in trouble for stealing something. Oh, Jack of Hearts who stole the tarts, you amuse me. Also, Wanda, from Corner Gas as the Dormouse is hilarious. Finally, they get the whole underlying darkness in the original texts. They deserve serious props for working in the poetry the way they do.

As the Mad Hatter says: "Does this look like a kid's story to you?"

I think I need to make icons from this.
