To begin, as much as I enjoyed David Morrissey, I'm glad he's not really the next Doctor. Although, I would appreciate it if seanchaidh, who heard my predictions yesterday before I'd watched beyond the whole breaking into the house thing, would nicely confirm that I predicted what was up with David Morrissey's character, long before the Doctor did.
I'll start with things I liked:
1) It was better than last year's special.
2) The Doctor's real reason for travelling alone.
3) The various ways the "next" Doctor imitated the real Doctor.
4) The 350971350 (actual number, I'm sure) continuity references.
5) Ms. Hartigan was a great villian.
6) David Morrissey.
7) Tennant is still the Doctor.
8) Seeing all the Doctors. I admit, I applauded Eccleston.
9) The number of times I could reference Blackpool when I recap this.
Things I went "huh" about:
1) Why did they blow up at the end? Seriously, if her mind was disconnected, how did that happen?
2) Rosita as a nursemaid? Ouch.
3) How the engine kept working without the children.
Things I didn't like:
1) Frederick. The kid had the emotional range of a teaspoon. It's too bad because they've previously had a great record of child actors in the Whoniverse. Jasmine was one of the few good things about "Small Worlds." The little kid who thought the sky wsa made of diamonds at the end of the third season. All the kids Nancy took care of during the blitz. I could go on, but I think this proves the point.
2) That I did predict what was up with Morrissey's character early on. I like being surprised.
3) Rosita's helmet hair.
All in all, I did enjoy "The Next Doctor" but put off watching it because I'm trying to, in a ridiculous way, stretch Tennant's time as Ten. It's the same reason I didn't watch "Parting of the Ways" for nearly two years.
Now, in other news, I just got word that I'll be completely dominating thw Whoniverse as I'll be covering ths second season of The Sarah Jane Adventures for Recapist. I'm a little wary of potentially trodding on the beloved instituition that is Sarah Jane Smith. On the other hand, I won't feel the least bit terrible about drooling all over Maria's very hot dad. Unfortunately, he isn't in it as much for reasons that would be spoilery so I'll keep quiet.
PS: Those of you living in the States, could you let me know when Sci-fi starts advertising for it? I have to post the recaps in conjunction with the US's first run. I don't want any mix-ups like I had with "The Unicorn and the Wasp" where I didn't realize there was a week's break in the airing of new episodes and posted it early.
Now, I must go make my house presentable for New Year's. There will be paper everywhere -- because of my job, but everything else will be clean and shiny. Paper may be the blight of my job, but I keep a clean house.
